Before that when the amateur hot rodders wanted to see how fast their cars would go, they had to do it on the dry lakes in Southern California. The dry lakes such as El Mirage, Muroc, and others while providing flat hard surfaces to race on, also often had poor driving conditions with dirt berms at times lining the course that led to crashes, injuries, and sometimes even deaths.
